Quotee

"If it had been easy for Romeo to get to Juliet, nobody would have cared. Same goes for Cyrano and Don Quixote and Gatsby and their respective paramours. What captures the imagination is watching men throw themselves at a brick wall over and over again, and wondering if this is the time that they won't be able to get back up." - from Jodi Picoult's Vanishing Acts

Going too Far (195-245)

Summary
This last section of the book is very dramatic. So many things happens between John and Meg. After their visit to the beach, they head back to John's apartment to have sex. After about an hour and a half of making out and ready to take it to the next level, Meg refused to take her clothes off completely. John also refused to have sex with her if she won't reveal herself and trust him. Meg gets angry and runs away from the apartment. John runs after her shirtless and tries to settle the disagreedment. Meg, angry, just makes the situation worst. They go back and forth arguing until she finally runs away for good. The next morning, as a way to get back at him for last night and make up, she "plans" a visit to the bridge where she demands John to come after her and save her before a train comes in 15 minutes. John follows her, but instead of making up with her like Meg planned, he handcuffed her. She tries to get away but he pushes her against the wall and says, "Don't resist arrest" (Echols 219).
I guess she fainted after because she woke up in the back of John's car. An ambulance, and many of John's police friends cars that Meg know, are there settling down the scene. Officer Leroy is mad at Meg for what she's done and told her that she should have never done that since she knows that John's brother and his girlfriend were the ones who died on the bridge a few years ago. Meg is in shock because she never knew this and tries to go over and talk to John who is angrily facing away. Officer Leroy holds her back and said if she gets near him, she will be handcuffed again. Then Meg cried for the first time since sophomore year.
After this incident, Meg had a personality check. She decides to dye her hair it's natural color and decides that she needs to get a real friend because without John, she really has no friends. She calls up Tiffany to vent and they made a whole plan about how they will share an apartment while they are in college and do everything together. They head to the college party later where she hoped John would be. To her surprise, he was there but his temper was off. He almost beat up Eric because of the rumors he is spreading around about Meg and Will together, and almost beat up Will because for a second, he actually believed in the lie Eric told him. After this dramatic scene, John leaves the party and went to sit by a fountain. Meg follows and she apologized for the pain she had cost him. They made up there and John told her of his plan of going to college.
Nonetheless, the ending was wonderful. John and Meg are officially together. Also, Meg's parents came home and saw her daughter's natural hair and they knew, "I was finally cured" (Echols 245).

Quote
"I crossed my arms and hugged myself, but it was no use. I whispered, "What have we done to each other?"" (Echols 223).

Reaction
Meg said this when Officer Leroy told her that John's brother and girlfriend had died on the bridge. I thought this quote really sums up the whole story because throughout the novel, there was a back and forth conflict between Meg and John. One time John would do something to hurt Meg, another time Meg would hurt John and goes on and on in a cycle.

Going too Far (147-194)

Summary
Stronger bond was created between Meg and John in this part of the book. Also, greater drama occurred. Meg hit and called John a "fuck" when he made her look at a real dead girl from a car accident. She fainted then and when she became a little more conscience, she hit and pushed him several times in front of all the other police officers around and said, "I had cancer, you fuck!" (Echols 148). She became angry at him, not understanding the reason why John made her look at the body was to show her how she could end up if she continues the way she did. The next day, Eric called Meg on a "booty call" and she accepted, making him agree that they will both be sober and drug free. However, when the time came, Meg backed out and told Eric she really cannot have sex with him unless she is drunk because she really does not like him. Officer After (John) and Officer Leroy came to the scene and rescued Meg from danger. There, Meg and John made up and created a stronger bond. Meg told him the story about her eight grade experience when she struggled with the fact that she had leukemia and had to take chemotherapy to get better. John cried a little and told her she should be proud that her parents helped her through it. She said she was and that is why she is working at their diner for free to help pay off hospital bills. They headed back to work and while on duty, John allowed Meg to kiss him for good luck before he headed inside a store being robbed with three guys with weapons. He also held her hands tight which all violated the rule "do not touch me while I am in uniform."
That was the last night that Meg was to spend on John's shift under the Power That Can Be program but not the last time they will be together. That morning, while Meg was working, John came in with jeans and a t-shirt, normal teenage clothes, and asked Meg to take a trip to the beach in Miami to make up for her spring break fun. She greatly accepted and took a 5 hour trip there. So far they are having fun chasing each other around and having an unforgeable picnic under the sunset. This is where chapter 15, page 194, ends.

Quote
"They tried to get me out of the car and I started kicking. They strapped my legs together and picked me up like a sheep going to slaughter" (Echols 173).

Reaction
This made me laugh, although it isn't really funny. Meg said this when she was explaining what happened when she found out she had leukemia but did not want chemotherapy and tried with all her might to get away from it. She tried running away from her parents on the way to the hospital but because of her cancer, she collapsed and couldn't run any longer. Police came, took her and brought her to the hospital strapping her legs together that wanted to break free and run away again. I could imagine a little kid doing that but not really eight-grader Meg. But then again, it must be frightening to know you have cancer and about to die soon. I feel sorry for her although the image of it seems pretty funny.

Going too Far (100-146)

Summary:
In this 3rd section of this book, Meg and John's relationship got much better. They found out a lot about each other. For John, Meg found out from him that he loves art and if he had gone to college, which he said he will not do, he would have majored in art and not criminal justice or law. Meg told John why she was in such of hurry to leave her parents house and live on her own. She told him that they were overprotective and make her work at their restaurant without paying her, like she is their slave. John also told Meg about how he went all around Europe after he graduated police academy. Meg was surprised and admitted she was jealous. They made a truce to be friends and stop fighting and for the first time, John allowed Meg to touch him while he was in uniform. As they went back to work and headed to take care of a barfight, Meg encountered her boyfriend (or ex-boyfriend), Eric, with John's ex-girlfriend Angie together drinking at the bar. John, doing his job, warned them about underage drinking, and as he drive behind their cars to make sure they get home safely, John and Meg made a "date" for "6:01 A.M. Thursday." This actually was a sex date they planned once they get off their shift on Thursday morning. As they build up to "6:01 A.M. Thursday", they get closer to each other, relationship wise, that John let Meg into his apartment that is full of arts on the walls after he was soaked with mud and rain and had to change.
Now they are just waiting for the day to come where they come back to the apartment and do something else than just check out John's arts, change privately, and head back to police work.

Quote:
"John held me with the dark look. Part of me wanted to embrace the dark look, chase it wherever it went, on the off chance I could convert it to my side" (Echols 100)

Reaction:
I don't really understand what Meg is saying here but it sounds really nice. I know she likes John's dark look so perhaps she is literally saying that she wished that this look could stay on his face forever because it give her warmth. But I don't quite understand when she said on the off chance to covert it to her side. Does she want that dark look herself?
